The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary US federal agency conducting and supporting basic, clinical, and translational medical research. One particular area of concern within NIH’s work on infectious diseases is antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with a focus on finding new diagnostics that can quickly detect resistance and new antibiotic drugs and vaccines to prevent and treat bacterial infections.
NIH funding opportunities include:
- Parent Announcements allowing applicants to submit an investigator-initiated application
- Program Announcements (PAs) or Notices of Special Interest issued by one or more Institutes / Centers issued by one or more Institutes and Centers to highlight areas of scientific interest. There are two types of PA:
- PAS: with set-aside funds
- PAR: special receipt, referral, and/or review considerations
- Requests for Applications (RFA) issued by one or more Institutes / Centers to highlight well-defined areas of scientific interest to accomplish specific program objectives
