European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant
The European Research Council (ERC) supports frontier research in any field. It is open to Principal Investigators (PIs) worldwide, as long as the Host Institution (HI) of the principal investigator that receives ERC funding is established in a Member State or a country associated to Horizon Europe. The ERC has four major grant programmes: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants, and Synergy Grants.
The ERC Consolidator Grant supports researchers with 7-12 years of experience.
A call for proposals opened in September 2024 and will close in January 2025.

The ERC is a programme under Horizon Europe.
The overall ERC budget from 2021 to 2027 is more than EUR 16 billion. For 2025, the estimated budget for ERC Consolidator Grant is EUR 719 million for approximately 354 grants.
EUR 2 million for a period of up to 5 years. An additional amount of EUR 1 million can be requested in the proposal in total to cover eligible ‘start-up’ costs for Principal Investigators moving to the EU or an Associated Country from elsewhere as a consequence of receiving an ERC grant and/or the purchase of major equipment and/or access to large facilities, and/or other major experimental and field work costs, excluding personnel costs.
An ERC Synergy grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the research plus a contribution towards indirect costs.
Principal Investigators who may still be consolidating their own independent research team or programme.
Applications can be made in any field of research.
In a Consolidator Grant, researchers are required to have 7-12 years of experience since completion of PhD (extensions are possible under certain circumstances) as well as scientific track record and an excellent research proposal. Up to four host institutions (HIs) may engage PIs. Applicants are required to carry out their research in a host institution (HI) based in EU Member States and countries associated to Horizon Europe. In addition, Swiss legal entities will be treated as being “entities established in Associated Countries” for the Starting Grant, Consolidator Grant and Synergy Grant calls for proposals in the forthcoming ERC work programme 2025.
