European Research Centre (ERC) Synergy Grant
The European Research Council (ERC) supports frontier research in any field. It is open to investigators worldwide, as long as the host institution (HI) of the principal investigator that receives ERC funding is established in a Member State or a country associated to Horizon Europe. The ERC has four major grant programmes: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants, and Synergy Grants.
The ERC Synergy Grant supports joint projects of multiple researchers focusing on research problems that could not be solely addressed by one principal investigator.
Under the 2024 work programme, there was one call for proposals. It is now closed.

European Research Council (ERC)
The ERC is a programme under Horizon Europe.
The overall ERC budget from 2021 to 2027 is more than EUR 16 billion. For 2024, the estimated budget for ERC Synergy Grant is EUR 400 million for approximately 39 grants.
Synergy Grants can be up to a maximum of EUR 10 million for a period of six years (pro rata for projects of shorter duration). An additional amount of EUR 4 million can be requested in the proposal in total to cover eligible ‘start-up’ costs for Principal Investigators moving to the EU or an Associated Country from elsewhere as a consequence of receiving an ERC grant and/or the purchase of major equipment and/or access to large facilities.
A European Research Council Synergy grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the research plus a contribution towards indirect costs.
Small group of two to four Principal Investigators to jointly address ambitious research problems that could not be addressed by the individual Principal Investigators and their teams working alone.
Applications can be made in any field of research.
Applicants are required to carry out their research in a host institution (HI) based in the following geographical areas:
- European Union Member States
- Countries associated to Horizon Europe
- Other third countries (Synergy Grants only)
In addition, Swiss legal entities will be treated as being “entities established in Associated Countries” for the Starting Grant, Consolidator Grant and Synergy Grant calls for proposals in the forthcoming ERC work programme 2025.
In a Synergy Grant, a group of two to maximum four Principal Investigators (PIs) working together can apply. Up to four host institutions (HIs) may engage PIs.
Depending on the particular project (up to six years).
Please refer to the ‘Status’ section.
